Compliance Officer / MLRO
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As MLRO
- Oversee and enhance the company’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorist Financing (CTF) framework to ensure compliance with Maltese and EU regulations.
- Conduct transaction monitoring, investigate suspicious activity, and submit Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to the FIAU where necessary.
- Manage sanctions screening, Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) monitoring, and Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) processes for high-risk clients.
- Ensure proper Know Your Customer (KYC) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD) procedures are applied throughout the company’s operations.
Maintain detailed records of AML investigations, ensuring full regulatory compliance. - Keep up to date with AML regulations, FATF recommendations, and FIAU guidelines to ensure the company’s practices remain compliant.
- Provide AML training and awareness to employees, fostering a strong compliance culture.
As Compliance Officer
- Act as the appointed Compliance Officer and main point of contact with the MFSA for regulatory matters, audits, and reporting.
- Work closely with the Executive Director and the Group Compliance Team (locally and overseas) to implement and manage an effective compliance monitoring program.
- Advise on regulatory changes, internal policies, and governance requirements to ensure ongoing adherence to MFSA rules and Financial Services Laws.
- Review and update company policies, procedures, and controls to align with compliance best practices and legal requirements.
- Conduct internal compliance audits to assess the effectiveness of current controls and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare reports for senior management and regulatory bodies, outlining compliance risks, regulatory changes, and recommended actions.
- Support staff training and development on regulatory obligations, data protection, and ethical business practices.
REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND EDUCATION
- A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Law, Business, or a related field.
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience in regulatory compliance, AML/CFT, or financial services.
- Prior experience as an MLRO, Compliance Officer, or within a similar senior compliance role.
- Strong understanding of AML regulations, MFSA requirements, FIAU guidelines, and EU financial crime directives.
- Familiarity with AML reporting tools (such as GoAML) and transaction monitoring systems.
- Ability to liaise with regulators, handle regulatory submissions, and lead compliance reviews.
- PQ’d as a Compliance Officer with the MFSA or the ability to qualify for the role is an advantage.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to make risk-based compliance decisions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train staff and advise senior management.
- A clean professional record, with no history of regulatory breaches or misconduct.
